Space books
Since setting up my freelance agency, I have written two books and been involved in the detailed planning and production of another. I am interested in similar projects in the future.
My first book, Astronomy - a beginner's guide to the sky at night, was published by Igloo in 2007. This was a practical guide for adults wanting to know about the universe and how to take up stargazing for themselves.
I worked on a detailed plan for the book, then once the brief was accepted, I turned copy around for the whole book in just a few weeks. I also helped originate star maps and constellation charts and to source a large number of fine photographs and other illustrations to meet a tight budget.
As well as writing Astronomy, I undertook the task of setting up a companion volume for children, called Stars & Planets, also published by Igloo. Again I was heavily involved in planning the book's contents including photos and star charts, although the final volume was authored by a colleague due to time constraints (I was writing Astronomy!).
I recently completed my latest book Where Did Pluto Go? with Ivy Press for Reader's Digest in New York. Due to be published in March 2009, this was a very enjoyable project. Prompted by the "demotion" of our former ninth planet, it is a look at our changing ideas about the solar system, whether due to new discoveries or altered perceptions.
I am happy to consider further books, particularly about amateur astronomy, or beginners' guides to the universe.
My many years as an amateur astronomer, as well as a journalist, have included more than 30 years as an officer of the Society for Popular Astronomy, which is one of the world's leading organisations for beginners to astronomy.
I have edited the SPA journal, Popular Astronomy, and their regular newsletter, the News Circulars, as well as helping set up and being former Webmaster for their very active website.
